Firewall and Proxy Settings

Firewalls and proxy servers are the most common cause of SwingTracker connection problems, but SwingTracker can be configured to get through most firewalls and proxies without too much trouble. If you are connecting to the Internet through work or school, a firewall or proxy is almost certainly the cause of your connection problem. If you are connecting to the Internet from your home, it is possible that your ISP (Internet Service Provider) uses a firewall or proxy server. In any of these cases, here's what to try:

  1. Click Setup button on the login window of SwingTracker.

  2. Type in the proxy host name and port number. If you are not sure about this, you can either ask your system administrator or go to your web browser and check out the proxy settings.

  3. If you need to type in proxy username and password to connect to the proxy server, check Proxy requires username and password checkbox. Input your proxy username and password. Make sure that you do not type in SwingTracker's username and password.

  4. Close this window and try to user SwingTracker again.

One way to determine what the correct proxy settings are is to check the settings on your web browser:

Netscape Navigator/Communicator 4.x

  1. Pull down the Edit menu, the click on Preferences.

  2. A new window called Preferences will appear.

  3. Double-click on Advanced, then select Proxies.

  4. If manual proxy configuration is checked, click on the view button to see your proxy information. Be sure you do not change any of it!

  5. Write down all of the proxy information before clicking on the Cancel button.

  6. Go back to the Setup in SwingTracker and type in the proxy information.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x

  1. Pull down the View menu, then click on Internet Options.

  2. A new window titled Internet Options will appear.

  3. Click on the Connection tab.

  4. Find the section called Proxy server.

  5. If there is a check in the box next to Access the Internet using a proxy server, write down the address and port number of your proxy server, then click on the Cancel button.

  6. Go back to the Setup in SwingTracker and type in the proxy information.

If you try all of this and the SwingTracker still cannot log in, and you are connecting to the Internet through work or school, contact your network administrator to make sure that your firewall and proxy settings are correct. If you are connecting to the Internet from your home, call your ISP to find out if they use a firewall or proxy server.
